Social Rules of Speaking:
|
Welcome!Hello and welcome to the social rules of speaking resource site. This site was created by Chisako Cole and Jordan Ruyle, two composition lecturers in UC Berkeley’s College Writing Programs. We both have backgrounds in TESOL and wanted to collaborate on a project that would bring together helpful ideas that we’ve found in our careers and develop/ refine activities that we’ve used and develop new ones.
At UC Berkeley, we both work with many international students in our composition classes. We wanted to give lecturers across campus and in the greater academic community tools and resources for improving engagement for their international students. We decided to focus on raising awareness of how culture influences our expectations and communications and on building a classroom culture of participation, communication, and respect. |
What You'll Find |
On this site, then, you will find descriptions of the theoretical underpinnings of our activities- who we consulted and borrowed from as we developed these activities. You will also find activities to use in a classroom with a high population of international students or with a low population of international students. The activities can also be adapted for use in classes without international students, since many of the community- and awareness-building activities will benefit any group of students.
Finally, there is a resource page with links to activities, articles, and other materials related to this topic. |
